Explore, Energize, Nourish: 4 Travel Wellness Essentials for the Road

Essential travel wellness tools by Shari Zisk

You won’t believe all the wellness tools I could fit into a medium suitcase on my recent month-long European trip. In the past, I would have brought two large, heavy suitcases, but now I have figured out how to travel light and stay healthy. Here are four travel wellness essentials that helped me stay healthy, strong, and radiant while exploring gorgeous Switzerland.

Stay fit and nourished while on the road

Nourishment and recovery are now essential to my daily routine, and I strive to maintain them even while traveling. Going on a longer journey with minimal luggage can be challenging, especially when my usual daily wellness routine at home involves so many appliances, tools, and gear, such as blenders, mugs, exercise mats, and beauty products. However, I have almost mastered the art of staying healthy on the road with a few must-have travel wellness tools. During my recent trip to beautiful Switzerland, I carried a special beauty cream, a unique travel bottle, multi-purpose shoes, and a very squishy foam roller that kept me refreshed and rejuvenated throughout the summer.

One beauty cream does it all

Once this secret gets out, people will be stockpiling this supercream like Stanley Quencher cups. I brought one bottle of beauty cream with me on my month-long vacation, and it covered all of my cream and lotion needs. Yes, one single cream. I use Rixx Lotion as a face cream, body cream, apres-sun cream, apres-shave lotion, sore-achy-muscle cream, and face night cream.

I’ve been using Rixx Lotion for almost ten years. It’s not a new beauty cream; in fact, it’s been around since the 1960s. I first met the owners, Donna and Gerry, when they were promoting Rixx at a health food store in Malibu. Since then, I’ve always kept a bottle or two in my home.

The many ways I use Rixx Lotion:

  • It’s non-greasy and quickly absorbed, so it works well under my make-up.
  • It is so hydrating that it can be used as a night face cream. I always wake up with moist, soft skin.
  • It is light and soothing and contains healing aloe, so you can use it on your face & body after a day in the sun.
  • Its anti-inflammatory properties penetrate deep, making it soothing for overworked muscles. It is perfect for tight calves after a long day of sightseeing. It’s ideal to rub into neck and shoulder muscles after a long day of wearing a backpack. It was initially developed as a horse linament, a soothing treatment for temporary muscular soreness caused by overexertion or minor injuries.
  • It’s gentle enough for children.
  • Oh, and remember that it’s ‘clean.’ I only use clean beauty products, so you won’t find any toxic recommendations here.
  • And the very best part is the price. $18 per bottle makes this a beauty + travel steal.

Here are the ingredients:

Witch Hazel Extract, Aloe vera Gel, Vegetable Glycerin, Hempseed Oil, Lecithin, Caprylic/Capric triglyceride, Sesame Seed Oil, Chamomile Extract, Vitamin E Acetate, Centella Asiatica Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Dexapanthenol (Vitamin B5), Shea Butter, Vitamin A Palmitate, Sodium PCA, Comfrey root Extract, Allantoin, Essential oils, Gluconolactone and Grapeseed Extract.

The very best travel bottle

Asobu means “fun and playful” in Japanese, and during my month-long trip in the Alps, my adorable Asobu Orb travel bottle never left my side. This versatile 14 oz bottle proved to be an incredibly useful travel accessory, making it my new favorite item to bring on my travels.

  • On my nightstand for midnight water sipping. The lid keeps critters out.

  • As a quick-grab water bottle that fits in the side pouch of my backpack.
  • As my poolside beverage container that keeps bugs out and drinks cool.
  • As my coffee or tea to-go container.

Why I like my Asobu Orb travel cup

  • The lid also serves as a cup, which is handy, especially when traveling with children.
  • The wide opening makes adding powder and ice a breeze.
  • It fits beautifully in the side pouch of my backpack and my small handbag.

My fascia care is essential

Are you serious? Who brings a foam roller when they travel? However, once you understand the significance of caring for your fascia, you’ll start doing it yourself. Travelling can be harsh on our fascia, so having a mini, soft foam roller is essential, especially after long, dehydrating flights, and extended days of walking and overstimulation.

My MELT soft foam travel roller fit in my medium-sized suitcase, and I used it as soon as I landed and every day of my trip.

How I used my MELT Travel Foam Roller

Sitting for extended periods compresses fascia, leading to stiffness, fatigue, and pain. I targeted my hips, glutes, and hamstrings after a 9-hour flight.

Working on fascia is a potent therapeutic activity to reduce pain and promote recovery. I worked on my calves every day after long days of hiking or sightseeing.

Compression prevents the beautiful circulation of fluids at all levels of tissues. A heavy backpack will cause muscle fatigue and whole-body fatigue. After wearing my heavy backpack all day, I used my roller on my arms, shoulders, and traps.

I worked on my face to keep the fascial fluid flowing so I looked radiant daily.

Why I like my MELT Travel Foam Roller

MELT foam rollers are soft and have a textured grippy surface, which is essential for fascia work. When the roller grips the skin, it helps create the shearing required to move hydration back into the tissue.

MELT foam rollers are very soft, enabling me to treat tissue without any pain response. This helps in our healing process.

Travel shoes that check all the boxes

Shoes used to take up a lot of space and weight in my suitcase when I traveled. I would pack separate shoes for travel days, workouts, long walks, and evenings. However, after discovering Allbirds, I only packed one pair of shoes on my month-long European trip – the Allbirds Super Light Tree Runners (Oh, and a pair of flip-flops too). These shoes are so comfortable and dreamy that I used them as my travel day shoes. Also, I could walk the cobblestone streets all day without discomfort or foot pain. They also served as my favorite workout shoes, which I used to cross-train in the hotel gym and hike Switzerland’s Parcoursevita trails. Additionally, this season’s woven white (blizzard) shoes were elegant enough for lunch on Lake Como and poolside happy hour.
